Surgoinsville city board approved crypto mining regulations today. Ordinance No. 2026-0414 caps total mining power at 100MW. Rules mandate battery energy storage systems (BESS) for operations exceeding 5MW, per Kingsport Times News.
The four-to-one vote targets strain on the local Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) substation. Facilities deploy BESS covering 40% of peak load for grid stability.
Crypto Mining Regulations Mandate 400MWh BESS for Grid Stability
New mines require four-hour duration storage at 95% round-trip efficiency before grid connection, per Ordinance No. 2026-0414. Existing operators retrofit by December 31, 2026.
"This ensures mining doesn't overload our grid," said Danny Dye, Surgoinsville Mayor.
TVA data shows the substation handles 250MW peak load. Crypto mining consumed 15% of capacity last year, per TVA grid reports. Regulators project 400MWh total BESS installs over two years.
BloombergNEF estimates LFP systems cost USD 250/kWh installed. Flow batteries cost USD 300/kWh for longer-duration applications.
